The oil cooler core is the plate-stack heat exchanger inside the engine's lubricating oil cooler housing: engine oil passes through the stacked plates while engine coolant flows around them, holding oil temperature in check under sustained load so the oil keeps its film strength and the bearings, pistons and turbochargers are protected. The QSK60 uses four of these cores per engine, so they are replaced as a set on a rebuild or singly when a core leaks, clogs or fails a pressure test. 3641960 is the current Cummins number and replaces 3082360 and 4101011 — the core fitted to the QSK60 HPI (CM500) build, CPL 2848, as used in Komatsu 830E and 930E haul trucks; dealer listings also give it for the QSK45 and QSK95.
