The heat exchanger is the shell-and-tube vessel that transfers heat from the engine's closed jacket-water circuit into raw seawater drawn through by the raw-water pump, so the engine runs on treated coolant instead of corrosive seawater — it is what gets replaced when the tube stack corrodes, furs up or leaks coolant into the raw-water side.
